Keyano Moves to 17-0 with Win Against Briercrest

by Jeff Misener

The Keyano Huskies (16-0, 1st in North Division) journeyed to Caronport for a tilt against the 2- 16 Briercrest Clippers. The Huskies are ranked #2 in CCAA men's basketball, but Briercrest has exhibited a brand of feisty, energetic basketball that can take opponents by surprise.

The game opened with sharp shooting by both teams. Keyano's Sean-Michael Clancey cashed in from outside, while several Briercrest shooters converted their interior looks. Whenever Keyano had a surge of offensive success, the Clippers quickly responded. A three from Lual Piok and a nasty dunk from Clippers' big man Zach Martens gave the Huskies' a slim 24-23 edge after one period.

Both teams struggled to gain traction on offense early in the second frame. Keyano ran patient sets and found success close to the rim. Briercrest forward Oroma Bongomin found his shot and kept the hosts close, but Keyano discovered their dominant stride, commanding the offensive boards and cranking up their interior defense. Huskies' guard DJ Haynes sparked his team's heightened interest in the game as the visitors surged to a 50-34 halftime lead.

Keyano's advantage grew on the strength of disciplined offense and strong team defense. Haynes and Huskies' forwards Omeechi Williams and Stefan Jovcic converted in the paint with regularity. For every Clippers' basket in the quarter, Keyano seemed to score two, and when their shots did not fall, they nailed their free throws. Keyano enjoyed a 76-50 lead after three quarters.

Keyano maintained their defensive control in the last frame, limiting the host's offensive efforts to single shots, with Danny Mullens and Riley Seaborn doing the bulk of the Clippers' scoring. On offense, Clancey and Williams splashed triples and Haynes continued to drive to the hoop. With the outcome decided, both teams introduced their bench players into the action as Keyano celebrated a comprehensive 95-62 triumph.

Keyano's DJ Haynes received Player of the Game honours on the strength of his game-high 27 points and six boards. Teammate Omeechi Williams added 15 points, 10 rebounds, and six assists. For the Clippers, center Zach Martens registered eight points and six boards to earn the honour, while Oroma Bongomin led Briercrest with 12 points.
