Lightning leap over Broncos

The St. Mary's University Lightning were relentless at the Ralph Klein Centre on Saturday, knocking off the Olds College Broncos 118-80 to sweep a home-and-home weekend between the two sides.

Johnpaul Okodua was dominant through the game for the Lightning (8-3), finishing with a game-high 23 points to go with 16 rebounds and four blocks, while Brock Dewsbery added 22 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals. Meanwhile, Kevin Hammer was consistent off the bench for St. Mary's with 15 points, four rebounds, three steals and two assists, good enough for Player of the Game honours as the Lightning shot 56.6 per cent from the field and 44.4 per cent from three-point range.

For Olds College (1-11), Player of the Game Artemus Rapada led the way with 18 points, six assists and three steals, while Austin Nzige-Nyambok finished with 15 points, seven rebounds and three assists for the Broncos, who shot 76.9 per cent from the free throw line.

St. Mary's was the better team from the opening tipoff, racing out to an early 14-5 lead en route to a 37-26 lead through one quarter before building it out to a 67-48 halftime advantage. The Lightning further solidified their lead with a strong third quarter on both sides of the ball to go up 95-57 and eventually building out a 48-point advantage midway through the fourth.

The Lightning are now set for a pivotal doubleheader against the Lethbridge College Kodiaks next weekend  (8 p.m. Friday, 3 p.m. Saturday) with the top seed in the ACAC South hanging in the balance, while the Broncos will welcome the SAIT Trojans to Olds on Friday at 8 p.m. for a Make Some Noise for Mental Health game night.
