Trojans drop nailbiter against Lightning

CALGARY, ALTA., (Jan. 7, 2023) - Three wins in a row was not in the card for the SAIT Trojans men's basketball team.

A tight back and forth game played Saturday afternoon at The Jack Simpson Gymnasium saw the Trojans fall 90-89 to the visiting St. Mary's University Lightning in their Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) battle.

SAIT falls to 4-6 on the season, while the Lightning jump to 6-3.

St. Mary's just did not miss in the second half, going 10-for-15 from the three-point line to claw their way to the win.

Johnpaul Okodua led the Lightning with 20 points and 10 rebounds, while Marcus Masters led the Trojans with 23.

Okodua and SAIT's Charlie Conner (17 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists) were named Players of the Game.

Following the game, Conner was brought up for a special presentation, as head coach Marty Birky named him the first-ever recipient of the John M. Smith Equity and Diversity Award - a financial award created in honour of former men's basketball player John Smith, who was killed in October of 2021.
