St. Mary's Cruise to Easy Win Over Briercrest
Written by Jeff Misener
The Briercrest Clippers welcomed to the Margaret P. Reimer Memorial Gymnasium the St. Mary's Lightning for an ACAC South division game. Both teams are well back in the standings, with the visitors holding an edge in most of the key statistical metrics, but the Clippers are always invigorated by the raucous support of a large fan base.
Early in the action, Clippers' forward Matt Bryant put his mark on the game at both ends with great energy. Clippers' forward Danny Mullins split a double team for a short jumper, before STMU guard Caleb Jipp splashed a corner three. With Lightning centre Johnpaul Okodua on the bench with foul trouble, teammate Averie Armbrister took control, drilling a long triple and pull up jumper in quick succession as the visitors built a 28-15 advantage.
Jipp and Briercrest guard Brolin Simes traded hoops, but threes by Jipp and Armbrister extended the lead. Mullins benefitted from some crisp passing to convert a short fallaway, only to have St. Mary's Josh Castro reply from long range, as the Calgary school extended their lead to 54-32 after twenty minutes.
Early in quarter three, the Clippers' energetic play at both ends stimulated the fans, but Jipp stole their joy with a four-point play. After Angelo Santiago converted and Armbrister kissed the board with a fadeaway, the lead bulged to twenty-five. The Lightning big men locked down the paint defensively, limiting Briercrest's interior chances. The 76-48 score after three quarters testified to St. Mary's overall dominance.
The Clippers continued to grind away, but the St. Mary's lead held fast. Down the stretch, the Clippers emptied their bench and the subs performed admirably, but the damage had been done and St. Mary's cruised to a 98-66 victory.
Player of the Game for STMU was Caleb Jipp, who came off the bench to knock down five triples as part of his 24-point night. Briercrest's Daniel Mullins dropped 13 points and chipped in seven boards, earning the nod for the home school. St. Mary's Brock Dewsbery contributed 17 for his squad, while Matt Bryant, the emotional sparkplug for the Clippers, tossed in 13 and ripped down a game-high eight rebounds.
