Broncos defeat Rustlers in OT for first win of the season

It took an extra five minutes, but the Olds College Broncos broke into the win column on Friday, defeating the Lakeland College Rustlers 86-82 in overtime for their first win of the season at the Ralph Klein Centre on Friday.

Andre Fields posted a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds to go with five assists for the Broncos (1-6), while player of the game Gurech Gurech provided energy off the bench with 16 points of his own. Austin Nzige-Nyambok also posted a double-double with 12 points and 12 boards, while Keunte Howard and Tyreik Lennox also had 12 apiece.

For the Rustlers (3-4), player of the game John Mims had thehot hand with a game-high 29 points to go with three rebounds and three assists, while Bahaeddin Salma added 15 points and three rebounds. Meanwhile, Noah Horobetz Simpson had a monster game off the bench, finishing with 11 points and 20 rebounds.

In a sign of things to come, the first quarter was tightly contested with neither team letting the other get too far ahead, with a Howard three-point buzzer-beater giving Olds College a 20-19 lead through 10 minutes.

The second quarter followed a largely similar script with a few lead changes, only for the Broncos to close on a mini 6-0 run to take a 39-32 lead into halftime.

The start of the third quarter saw Lakeland storm back with a 12-0 run in a 1:54 stretch to go up 47-43 midway through the frame. However, timely threes from Sina Hashemi and Fields brought the score back to 55-55, with a Lennox layup at the buzzer making it 57-57 heading to the fourth, where the lead was never above one possession. After Mims went 1-of-2 from the line with six seconds to play, the stage was set for Fields to drain a contested three at the buzzer to send the game to overtime. From there, Lennox made a pair of quick layups early in the extra session to put the Broncos ahead to stay.

The Broncos will go for a weekend sweep on home court against the Keyano College Huskies at 8 p.m. tomorrow, while Lakeland will look to right the ship in Red Deer against the Kings tomorrow at 8 p.m.
