The Huskies stay undefeated with a win in Red Deer

Red Deer, November 18 - The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings basketball team was just no match for the Keyano College Huskies tonight in the end, who are nationally ranked and are an early season contender for the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Championships. They came into Red Deer undefeated and stayed that way after their 105-80 victory over the Kings.

Coming into this match, the Huskies were ranked number three in the nation and definitely proved that tonight.

But the Kings in the first quarter put up quite the fight. In this interdivisional matchup, it was quite a fast-paced quarter with both teams sprinting back and forth down the court. It was a high scoring quarter with both teams combining for 47 points, but it was the visitors taking a 26-21 lead after the first 10 minutes. Guard Sean-Michael Clancey led his team with eight points and two assists. For the Kings it was forward Cole Wicker (Bachelor of Education Secondary) and post Brett Hochhausen (Business Administration Management) leading their team with five points.

Kings guard Bernardo Moller would open the scoring in the second quarter with a three-pointer. Brazilian Eduardo Crespo (Academic Upgrading) would follow that up with a deep shot of his own to make it back-to-back threes for Red Deer to open up the second. But after this, the Huskies proved to show why they are so high on the national rankings and would explode for 30 points in the quarter. Moller would finish off the half for the Kings with a very deep three-pointer to go down by only 13 before the half. He would lead the Kings with nine points and Clancey for the Huskies finished off the quarter with an impressive 21 points.

The Huskies extended their lead to 16 but the Kings were still fighting in what was a closer match that could be expected with Red Deer not nationally-ranked and the Huskies undefeated. The Kings would hold Clancey to just three points in the quarter but would still manage to lead his team with 24 points. For the Kings, Crespo had an impressive 22 points before the end of the quarter.

Three minutes into the final quarter, the Huskies were looking like they were going to use all 24 seconds and turn the ball over. But Clancy had other ideas and would drain a three as the buzzer went off. On their next possession, the guard from Las Vegas would drain another three which forced Head Coach Darren Graham to call a timeout. In the end, the Huskies offence just outmatched the Kings and the visiting team will drive down to Olds with a 105-80 victory.

Players of the game were awarded to Huskies guard Sean-Michael Clancy and Kings post Jose Mauro. Clancy finished his night with 34 points, five rebounds and five assists. For Mauro, he was tied for the team lead with 22 points but finished off the night with eight rebounds and three assists.

The Kings will welcome the Lakeland College Rustlers tomorrow night and the Huskies will travel to Olds to take on the Broncos. Both matches will take place at 8 pm.
