Vikings hold off Broncos

The University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings withstood various rallies from the Olds College Broncos to leave the Ralph Klein Centre with an 82-77 win on Saturday.

Nic Harder led all scorers with 27 points and nine rebounds to pick up Player of the Game honours for the Vikings (3-3), while Ryan Degner added 21 points, and Brett Marlow posted 12 points to go with seven rebounds for Augustana, who shot 47.2 per cent from the field.

For Olds College (0-5), Keunte Howard led the charge with 18 points, while Andre Fields added 17 points and seven assists. Austin Nzige-Nyambok was the Broncos' Player of the Game after posting a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while adding five assists.

Augustana got the jump on Olds with a quick 7-0 lead, then building upon it to go into the second quarter with a 25-14 lead. However, a Corbin MacMillan basket at the end of the first served as a catalyst for the Broncos in the second, using a 14-2 run in a 2:07 span to tie the game at 27-27. However, Augustana closed the quarter with a 7-0 run, punctuated by a Degner three-ball to give the Vikings a 47-41 lead at halftime.

The third quarter played out to a similar script, with the Broncos hanging around early, only for the Vikings to close strong to take a 66-58 lead into the fourth, where the Broncos would get no closer after an early run to cut the deficit to 66-64.

The Vikings have a bye next week before resuming regular season play on Nov. 18 against the St. Mary's University Lightning in Calgary, while the Broncos will head to Edmonton next Friday to battle the Concordia University of Edmonton Thunder.
