Clippers Make More Noise for Mental Health but Fall to Kings 88-77
On Briercrest's make some noise for mental health night the Briercrest Clippers played host to the Red Deer Kings.
Briercrest's Riley Seaborn opened the scoring with a deep three, Red Deer responded with back-to-back three-pointers of their own. Eighteen points were scored between the teams in the opening two minutes of the game as both teams pushed the pace offensively. The Kings got out to a 19-11 lead halfway through the opening quarter. Zachary Martens of the clippers threw down a two-handed slam that got the home crowd into it. Briercrest used that momentum to close the lead to three leading to a Red Deer timeout. At the end of the first quarter, Reed Deer lead Briercrest by a score of 23-20.
Opening the second, the Clippers Brolin Simes hit a three to tie up the game. Solid play at both ends of the court saw the Clippers take a 32-29 lead with five minutes to go in the opening half. Strong shooting from Red Deer saw them retake their lead and extend it to 11 points on Briercrest, up 45-34 nearing the end of the half. At the end of the first half, Red Deer took a 47-36 lead into the break.
Coming out of halftime, Red Deer continued their deep attack, pushing their lead to 18, going up 59-41. Briercrest battled back, cutting the lead down to 10 halfway through the quarter. Both teams played with a mix of solid defense and good offense in a fun-to-watch third quarter. The clippers took a timeout down 15 with two minutes to go in the third. Out of the break, Red Deer held off the clipper's push and took a 12- point lead into the final quarter.
The Clippers started the fourth strong, cutting the deficit down to 7 points in the opening minutes. Red Deer held off their early surge, however, keeping a comfortable 10-point lead entering the final 5 minutes of play. Briercrest hit a couple of threes to close the gap, however, they were answered at the other end as well. The Clippers called timeout with 1:35 left in the game, down 8. Out of the break, Red Deer held Briercrest at bay, taking this game by a final score of 88-77.
The player of the game award for the Red Deer Kings went to #5 Tyronn King with an impressive 36 points and 12 Rebounds. For the Briercrest Clippers, the player of the game award was present to #10 Jackson Mayes with 6 points, 5 Rebounds, and 5 Assists.
