Alec Hilman shines in loss to Lethbridge

Olds College Broncos men's basketball team lost 111-76 to the Lethbridge College Kodiaks in the Parent Appreciation Game Friday, Nov. 15 at the Ralph Klein Centre.

Both teams seemed to be feeling each other out to start the game, with the Broncos scoring the first basket of the game off an inbounds pass from Alec Hilman and a quick jump shot from Muktar Mohamed. Lethbridge responded a minute later with a three-pointer to take the lead. They extended their lead a minute later on a fast break to make the score 5-2. Muktar Mohamed hit two free throws to cut into the lead before Lethbridge hit another three to extend their lead again. Yallah Sumo had a nice rebound and put back to cut the lead to 8-6 for Lethbridge a little less than half way through the quarter. Moments later Alec Hilman made a pair of free throws to tie the game. Lethbridge was able to build up a 22-11 lead which held until less than a minute left in the quarter when they hit a three which held until the buzzer to give them a 25-11 lead after one quarter.

The teams exchanged baskets to open the second quarter with a Muktar Mohamed layup cutting the lead to 29-17 for Lethbridge two minutes in to the quarter. Lethbridge went on a 13-2 run until a Colton Murrell jump shot cut the score to 42-21 half way through the quarter. A Landon Parrington rebound and basket made the score 48-23 with two and a half minutes left in the quarter. A pair of John Kaweesi free throws brought the score to 52-25 for Lethbridge with a minute left in the half. Mohamed Eltassi made a basket from the middle of the key to cut the score to 53-27 thirty seconds later. The half ended 58-27 for Lethbridge when they hit a buzzer beater.

Lethbridge extended their lead to 63-27 before a nice hook shot from Colton Murrell and fast break layup from Muktar Mohammed cut the lead to 63-31 two minutes into the third quarter. Lethbridge responded with a six point run, forcing an Olds timeout. Lethbridge extended their lead to 75-37 halfway through the quarter. A Landon Parrington rebound and layup, John Kaweesi drive and layup and Colton Murrell hook shot made the score 75-43 with two minutes left in the quarter. Colton Murrell continued to build the lead with two free throws before Lethbridge stopped the Broncos run. The teams exchanged baskets to make the score 79-55 after three quarters.

Lethbridge came out strong in the fourth quarter, building an 89-59 lead in under two minutes. A Yallah Sumo drive cut the score to 94-61. The teams exchanged baskets after that with the Broncos unable to cut much into the lead, with Lethbridge holding a 107-71 lead with three minutes left in the half. Alec Hilman had a nice dunk to cut the score to 107-73. Moments later he had a thundering dunk off a rebound. Lethbridge won the game 111-76.

Player of the game for Lethbridge was Chris Thomson with a game high 22 points and the Pit Barbecue Player of the Game for the Broncos was Alec Hilman with a game high nine rebounds to go with 15 points and a team high three assists and three steals.

The Broncos led the game in rebounds 39-37 and blocks 1-0 while Lethbridge held the advantage in the game in assists 22-10 and steals 21-7. Muktar Mohamed had a team high 21 points and Landon Parrington had the lone block of the game for the Broncos.

The Broncos host SAIT Saturday, Nov. 23 for Staff and Faculty Appreciation Night. Game time is 8:00 pm.
