Thunder and Rustlers are Golden at ACAC Curling Championships

Vermilion, AB - March 12, 2023 - Championship Sunday saw great curling as all the teams were battling for medals.

In the men's Augustana defeated NAIT in the semi-final to get a second chance to battle Concordia for a gold medal.  NAIT took on SAIT to see who would finish with a bronze medal.    The bronze medal game started off close before the Ooks pulled away to win the bronze medal.  Concordia and Augustana battled for the 3rd time in 3 days and Concordia picked up the win and the gold medal.

In the women's division, Augustana played SAIT in the semi where the Vikings came out on top and earned a trip to the gold medal game against Concordia.  SAIT would battle Red Deer for bronze.  The Trojans came out on top in the bronze game after a close game against the Queens.  In the gold game, the Thunder kept their weekend's perfect record in tack defeating the Vikings to earn the gold medal.

Red Deer defeated the Voyageurs in the mixed division to secure the bronze medal.  The Rustlers got another chance to see if they could win a gold medal on home ice.  Some great shots by the Rustlers skipped kept Lakeland slowly earning points in the game, which resulted in a win and a gold medal for the home team.

 

At the awards ceremony Ashley Hennefent from Portage College was awarded the female Rookie of the Year and Anthony Ogg from NAIT was selected as the male rookie of the year.  Josie Zimmerman from Augustana was named the year's female player, and Braden Pelech from Concordia picked up the Male Athlete of the Year.  The prestigious Charles Mortar award was presented to James McCabe from Concordia.
