ACAC Fall Curling Regional Recap

CALGARY, AB (November 27, 2022) - The first curling bonspiel of the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) season took part this weekend at the Airdrie Curling Club just outside of Calgary.

The host SAIT Trojans had some favourable results, as the Ben Helston rink went a perfect 5-0 in the men's draw - including a come-from-behind 7-5 win Sunday morning over Beau Cornelson's very tough University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings team that finished the event at 3-2.

Also finishing at 3-2 were the Nick Woznesensky-led Red Deer Polytechnic Kings, followed by the Concordia University of Edmonton Thunder, skipped by Braden Pelech, at 2-3.

NAIT and Lakeland College each went 1-4.

Josie Zimmerman led her Vikings rink to a 4-1 record to top the women's draw this weekend - winning four in a row after a narrow 6-5 loss to Concordia to open the event Friday afternoon.

Three teams finished at 3-2, including Bayly Scoffin's SAIT Trojans, Kaylee Raniseth's Red Deer Polytechnic Queens and Gabrielle Wood's Concordia of University Thunder.

NAIT and Lakeland College both finished the three-day event at 1-4.

The mixed curling event saw the return of Portage College, who last curled in the ACAC in the 2018-19 season. The Voyageurs, skipped by Ashley Hennenfent, finished at 2-2.

Jaden Morlock's Kings and Jacob Rahn's Ooks recorded identical 3-1 marks to cap the weekend.

Lakeland College went 0-4.

Teams will now wait until the new year for the second bonspiel, set for Jan. 20-22 in Edmonton and hosted by the Concordia Thunder.
