ACAC Badminton Tournament #1 Recap

Edmonton, AB (October 19, 2025) – The first ACAC Badminton Tournament of the 2025–2026 season was hosted by the NAIT Ooks in Edmonton, Alberta. The event brought together top collegiate badminton talent from across the province, featuring teams from the NAIT Ooks, SAIT Trojans, TKU Eagles, CUE Thunder, and the Burman University (BUR) Bobcats, who made their inaugural exhibition season debut.

Men's Singles

In Men's Singles, Mahdi Ahmadi (TKU) captured the title in a thrilling three-game final against Mono Suttinon (SAIT), winning 21-17, 9-21, 21-8. Ahmadi displayed exceptional skill and consistency throughout the tournament. Vincent Nguyen (TKU) earned the bronze medal after a strong performance in the third-place match, while Vivek Kodi (TKU) finished fourth, rounding out an impressive showing for TKU in the men's singles category.

Women's Singles

In Women's Singles, Melissa Roque (TKU) continued her dominant form, defeating Nana Amnutkkittikul (SAIT) in straight sets, 21-17, 21-9, to claim the gold medal. Khushi Vaniya (NAIT) secured third place with a decisive 21-8, 21-10 win over Emma Grabowski (SAIT). The women's singles division showcased strong competition across all participating institutions, with Roque once again proving to be the player to beat.

Men's Doubles

The NAIT duo of Matthew Wong and Ethan Lee earned top honours in Men's Doubles, winning the final 21-15, 21-13 over Mattias Andersson and Jonathan Su (CUE). The match featured fast-paced rallies and excellent teamwork from both sides. Vivek Kodi and Vincent Nguyen (TKU) took home the bronze after outlasting Harshit Saini and John Schumacher (SAIT) in a hard-fought three-game battle, 21-9, 17-21, 21-8.

Women's Doubles

In Women's Doubles, Archelle Ouano and Nana Amnutkkittikul (SAIT) captured gold with a convincing 21-11, 21-8 win over Khushi Vaniya and Mataia Wong (NAIT). The SAIT pair demonstrated excellent communication and precision throughout the match. Sasha Iastreb and Rachel Chan (NAIT) secured third place with a 21-17, 21-15 win over Cheyenne Smykalski and Emma Tran (CUE), giving NAIT two podium finishes in this category.

Mixed Doubles

The Mixed Doubles final featured an exciting showdown between Mono Suttinon and Archelle Ouano (SAIT) and Mahdi Ahmadi and Melissa Roque (TKU). After an intense back-and-forth battle, Suttinon and Ouano emerged victorious, winning 12-21, 21-14, 25-23. Matthew Wong and Mataia Wong (NAIT) earned the bronze with a solid 21-19, 21-12 win over Jonathan Su and Cheyenne Smykalski (CUE).

Overall Recap

The tournament marked an exciting start to the ACAC badminton season, filled with competitive matches and strong performances from returning veterans and new faces alike. TKU and SAIT led the medal standings, while NAIT impressed in doubles play and Burman University made a positive first impression in their exhibition debut.
