Dixon and McKay Named ACAC Men's Volleyball Coaches of the Year
RED DEER, AB (Feb. 22, 2017) – The Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) is proud to announce that Sean McKay of the SAIT Trojans (South Division) and Phil Dixon of the King's University Eagles (North Division) have been named the ACAC Men's Volleyball Coaches of the Year.
Dixon, now in his third season with the King's University Eagles, has significantly contributed to an already successful program. Finishing league play in second place for the North Division, the Eagles completed the season with a 16-8 record to qualify for the ACAC Championships for a third consecutive year.
"It has been very encouraging to see the progress they have made, and I have no doubt that they will continue to be a top level contender in the future," said King's University Eagles Athletic Director, Grace Scott. Throughout 2016-17, the Eagles have consistently held a Top 15 national ranking since November, finishing the league schedule with their highest ranking of the season, at eleventh.
McKay, in his first year as coach of the Trojans, is the first SAIT men's volleyball coach to earn the honour since Ryan Marsden was named the ACAC Blue Division Coach of the Year in the 2007/08 season.
McKay's first season with the Trojans resulted in a 17-7 record — the most wins by a SAIT team in a decade when the 2006/07 team went 20-0.
"Sean's commitment to excellence and clear passion for the game of volleyball has pushed his Trojans to new heights," said Wade Kolmel, SAIT Trojans Athletics and Recreation Director. "Sean took on the challenge of leading a new team in a new city in a new province, and by all accounts, he has positioned the Trojans to succeed. The SAIT Trojans Athletics and Recreation Department congratulate Sean on this achievement."
Dixon and McKay received the awards on Feb. 22, 2017 at the ACAC Men's Volleyball Conference Championship Banquet held in Red Deer, Alta.
