Wolves Use Late Goal to Top Thunder

EDMONTON, AB – The Concordia University of Edmonton (CUE) Thunder opened their regular season home schedule by welcoming the Grand Prairie Regional College (GPRC) Wolves on Saturday afternoon. The Wolves used a late penalty to take the lead in the dying minutes and hung on to the 1-0 win.

The first half of the game saw a tightly contested back and forth match, with chances for both teams. However, neither team was able to find the back of the net as they headed into the half tied 0-0. The second half started with a break away goal opportunity for the Wolves that was stopped by Thunder keeper Monica Dickson to keep things scoreless. This score line held until the 85th minute when a foul in the Thunder penalty box lead to a penalty kick opportunity for the Wolves. #10 Mariah Kyllo buried the shot from the spot to give the Wolves the late lead, and the Thunder ran out of time looking for an equalizer as the Wolves hung on.

Third year Thunder defender Emily Long commented after the game "we had our opportunities, but we just didn't bury them." Thunder head coach Frank Imbrogno echoed a similar sentiment as Long: "we had our opportunities at the beginning of the game to capitalize, but we were unable to capitalize on them."

The One Team Sports Players of Game were #10 Mariah Kyllo for the GPRC Wolves and #1 Monica Dickson for the Concordia Thunder.

The Thunder continue their schedule tomorrow as they visit the NAIT Ooks.
